That is how it has started to be on many new Lenovo systems. For example on my E430 it is Fn+F9. The availability of this function is handled by the thinkpad_acpi module and the /proc/acpi/ibm/hotkey file. If this button exists on your machine, you may want to have a look at the thinkpad-acpi docs in the linux-docs package.
Ah, yes Fn+F8 appears to be 'airplane mode' (disable all radios). Just pressing it doesn't do anything, but I will look into the thinkpad-acpi docs.
